1958 Pontiac Strato Chief shows its braves why it's the Chief
Bryce Roberts, who was commissioned for the job by 'Billy' (as he will be known for reasons of anonymity), sourced two donor Chiefs in Pietermaritzburg. To say that the two cars exhibited signs of rust would be like calling a hurricane a light afternoon breeze. Both cars resembled the Flintstone design: no floors, one with no seats, and gaping rust holes big enough to make them honorary convertibles.
With both cars now in Gauteng, Roberts could begin taking stock of the two Chiefs and plan the build based on 'Billy's' brief. 'Billy' is a client that commissioned this build for nostalgic reasons, to relive a time when your father took you out in the family pride and joy, a time when a young man falls under that spell, not easily defined, but nevertheless a spell that stays with you for life; the spell of the automobile. 'Billy' proposed a three-stage plan. In the first phase, the Chief was to retain much of its original qualities. Aside from minor deletes in the form of a few beadings and badges, Billy was after a more stock look.
